I was checking out Digg.com the other day and under their picture section, there was this picture of the Earth in comparison to the size of the Sun. And then the Sun compared to the nearest star and further sizes. After a while you realize just how small you actually are on a universal scale. Scientists concentrated the Hubble telescope in a small patch of sky next to the Moon and could see 10,000 galaxies in it and each galaxy contained 1 Trillion Stars. It was a real eye opener for me and made me realize several things.
There are galaxies so large in this picture that according to the current laws of physics they should not even exist. – What does this mean? That our model of physics is wrong or at least pretty faulty. Maybe within the Earth and its stratosphere these laws can be applied but over a universal scale that the human mind cannot comprehend do they work? This probably does not matter much to us as they work for what is important to us in day to day life and stop us floating off into space. It does tell us though that we have to keep asking questions, keep pushing the boundaries and never settle for a comfortable belief because there is so much out there to learn.
Things Get Built Slowly – The universe moves pretty damn slow, at least from our point of view. We are obviously part of this universe so we should stop trying to achieve things quickly and looking for the ultimate shortcut that does not exist. Sure the big bang might have happened in a second but look how slowly things are moving now. All things follow this pattern as they are submissive to the laws of the universe. This includes compound interest, the evolution of life and building good health and relationships.
All Things Make A Difference – Let us say that your physical body is the universe. You may think that because you are one cell that you are useless and can have no impact. How wrong this is. Lets take the example that you are a cancer cell. If you are then you can bring down the whole organism by acting a certain way and affecting those around you. No matter how small you are, you are making a difference. All those people out there thinking “I don’t make a difference” are making a difference! But on the other side of the coin…
Our Significance - We are so mind bogglingly small that it actually is beyond our understanding. This means one of two things to me. It means that any actions we take will not affect the universe one percentage in the spaciousness of eternal time, but can have a huge effect NOW. We can do whatever we want and know that no real effect has taken place. This is a good thing because we can fearlessly strive for the best from ourselves which is all we can ever give and know that even if we do fail, it does not even matter.
The Observation of Time-Travel – As we look at galaxies that are according to Wikipedia, 46.5 Billion light years away we see them in the past due to the time it takes light to travel (299 792 458 m/s). It is feasible that those galaxies do not even exist anymore and we are simply viewing them as they used to be. Is this not time travel? We are observing something in its past state and not how it is now. It is entirely possible that some life form billions if miles away is viewing the dinosaurs walking the Earth at this very moment. Even though we are here!
Other Life – We have no proof except for statistical probability that there is other life out there. In 14 billion years, I think it is likely that a life form would have contacted us by now if they had the power to as we evolved pretty late on in terms of the life of the universe. Maybe they already have and we do not know. It remains possible that we are the only life forms on the universe. That our brains, thoughts and bodies are the most advanced things that the universe has to offer. Isn’t that fantastic? If not, then there are other life forms out there. This is equally exciting!
We Are As Spacious As The Universe – This works for both New-agey types and hardcore sceptics. Have you ever looked into the vast unfathomable deepness of space and thought how dauntingly small and empty it is? Well you are just as vast and deep as that which you observe. Within the atoms that make up your body is huge spaciousness. The actual protons and electrons hardly take up any space.
I once heard that the solid parts of an atom compared to the empty parts are the equivalent of a fly in a football stadium. The common misconception is given by science textbooks that show atoms apparently close together and makes more logical sense. If you were to take out all of that space somehow, you would be extremely dense but I presume you would be so tiny that you could not be seen by the naked eye. Our physical bodies are basically empty space. In a way, t is useful to us to perceive them as solid though so we can go through every day life.
This means that we should go towards the truth which is that we are vast and spacious. We do this by becoming aware of what we are which is observers. Feel the energy field within and around you and the silent stillness all around through meditation, I recommend Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle. This is the root of what we are.
